What is Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a method of treating foot and ankle conditions through movement, strength training, heat, and massage. For some patients, this course of treatment may be an alternative to surgery, while for others it may be a way to recover from surgery faster.

Foot and Ankle Center Can Help

The majority of foot and ankle conditions we see here at Foot & Ankle Center can be treated through physical therapy. For those cases where surgery is necessary, we’ve found that post-surgical physical therapy cuts down on healing time, resulting in happier, healthier patients. We use physical therapy with many of our post-surgical patients to reduce pain and swelling and increase blood flow and range of motion. For patients who don’t need surgery, physical therapy can provide the relief they’ve been searching for from their condition. Plantar fasciitis, drop foot, hammer toe, and pronation are all common conditions that are successfully resolved through physical therapy.

What to Expect

Successful physical therapy requires a team approach from both the doctor and the patient. Your doctor will prescribe a course of therapy based on your age, weight, medical history, and occupation. Depending on your condition, your therapy session might cover only simple exercises like flexing the foot forward and backward, or it might include exercise machines like a treadmill or stair climber. But regardless of your foot or ankle condition, you should expect Drs. Jokhai and Shin, as well as the rest of the Foot & Ankle Center staff, to work with you every step of the way to a full recovery.
